The Commission was established in 1971 by an Act of the Alabama State Legislature to document and recognize the historic resources of Birmingham and Jefferson County.

The Commission responds to inquiries concerning the rehabilitation and restoration of historic properties, administers the Historical Marker Program, and recognizes achievement in scholarship and preservation through the annual Thomas Jefferson Awards.

Due to a financial shortfall, the Jefferson County Historical Commission is operating without a physical office. Contact us electronically, or by mail or telephone.
